Pediatrician Kerstin Hanson: Going to the Field After Residency
Pediatrician Kerstin Hanson says the year after residency is the perfect time to go on an MSF mission.
Kerstin Hanson is an American pediatrician who came to MSF right after her residency. In the year between the end of residency and the start of her neonatal fellowship, Hanson went on a series of missions to Chad, Nigeria, and Haiti.
Hanson says the time right after residency is the perfect time to go on a mission. "The experiences that you have in MSF—they're unlike experiences you'd ever have in the US. Right out of residency, I'm all of a sudden in charge of a malaria ICU in the middle of Africa. You never have that kind of autonomy and influence right after residency in the US."
