Work in the Field

Anesthesiologists / Nurse Anesthetists

MSF anesthesiologists/nurse anesthetists often work with emergency teams to treat people wounded in conflict zones. At other times, they join teams that are providing longer-term surgical care to communities without access to functioning health care systems.

Basic diagnostic equipment and facilities needed to run an operating room will be limited: there may not even be an X-ray machine. Responsibilities include general surgery, surgical-needs assessment, and training of local staff.

MSF asks anesthesiologists/nurse anesthetists to depart on very short notice to meet the needs of emergencies that require their skills. But MSF does offer anesthesiologists/nurse anesthetists the option of shorter-than-usual assignments (generally lasting from 4 weeks to 3 months or more).

Requirements

  • Must meet general requirements
  • Minimum commitment of at least 4 to 6 weeks
  • Current or recent practical experience
    (i.e. at least 6 months of clinical practice within the last 2 years)
  • Ability to work with limited technical resources
  • Experience in ob/gyn, pediatrics, and/or trauma
  • Availability on short notice

     Additional Requirements (Anesthesiologists)

  • Valid degree and current license
  • Completed residency in anesthesiology

     Additional Requirements (Nurse Anesthetists)

  • Valid degree and current license
  • At least 2 years work experience as a nurse anesthetist
