Director of Development
As a member of the international network of MSF, the US office, also known as MSF-USA, contributes significant human and financial resources, provides medical expertise to the organization and plays a leadership role in representing MSF to a global audience, both publicly through the media, and by interacting with the United Nations, US government entities, and other institutions and organizations based in the US.
MSF-USA is currently seeking a Director of Development to plan, organize, and direct all strategies, activities and staff members engaged in soliciting funds ($185.7 million+ in 2013) from a variety of private sources to support the work of MSF -- preparing fundraising materials, organizing fundraising events and educating donors regarding MSF field activities, advocacy efforts, and the plight of the populations we serve, while maintaining the highest ethical and legal standards, and ensuring that all communications with donors reflect the unique and independent medical-humanitarian voice and values of MSF.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is a member of MSF-USA’s senior management team. The Director of Development is responsible for developing secure, sustainable and diversified private income streams in order to meet the financial needs and ensure the independence of MSF’s operations. In particular, s/he will solicit funds from key donors, and develop fundraising strategies that build a broad base of support for the organization, that promote predictable and unrestricted giving, that respect donors’ intent and commitment and that are cost-efficient. The Development Director leads the process of analyzing and forecasting revenue for MSF-USA and setting and reviewing investment and revenue targets.
Position responsibilities:
Departmental Activities

Prepares strategic plan with short- and long-range goals to meet funding objectives and enlists support from members of MSF staff, the Board of Directors, the Board of Advisors and the MSF-USA Association.

Leads the annual process of:
-
setting and reviewing multi-year and yearly investment and revenue targets; and
-
determining the appropriate mix of income streams best designed to meet the strategic goal of diversified, predictable, secure and cost-efficient revenue

Maintains knowledge of legal and economic environment and philanthropic trends affecting fundraising. Ensures that fundraising strategies, messages, and practices reflect MSF’s medical humanitarian ‘voice’, abide by ethical standards, and respect our donors’ intent.

Ensures the achievement of satisfactory cost per dollar raised in relation to pre-set standards and to general and specific trends within the industry and the economy.

Directs the planning, coordination and administration of fundraising programs including

multi-channel direct marketing campaigns;

major gifts and planned giving;
-
and foundation and corporate giving

Maintains, cultivates and solicits a portfolio of major donors and Foundation & Corporate donors.

Ensures that the different fundraising programs within the Department are well integrated, complement each other and share tools and expertise; and that cross-departmental support (operations, donor services) reflect and serve the needs of all fundraising programs and the Department as a whole.

Oversees and coordinates the development of coherent systems to track donor information and history so that data is available in a variety of formats to sustain routine transactions and complex analysis.

Constantly monitors field activities to appropriately represent MSF in fundraising materials, via reading MSF reports and updates, regular attendance at program briefings, ensuring smooth and consistent review process of all funding material

Oversees efforts to build and organize activities of the Board of Advisors.

Provides monthly feedback and analysis of fundraising performance to the Executive Director

Be proactive in identifying and addressing possible dilemmas and challenges related to the fundraising situation with the Executive Director and the senior management team
Management and Interdepartmental Coordination
-
Participates in developing and carrying out organization-wide goals and objectives, formulating and administering organizational policies, and in making decisions with an organization-wide impact as a member of the MSF-USA Management Team.

Appoints, manages and evaluates team of 5direct reports who in turn manage teams of professional-level staff plus assistants, volunteers, interns and seasonal staff.

Prepares and administers department budget. Oversees relationships with and performance of all departmental vendors.

Maintain and expand strategic collaboration with both the Finance department and the Communication Department
-
Ensures that team members work with the Communications department
-
to coordinate fundraising activities with media, public education, and publications activities via print and web, and to ensure that MSF messages are integrated into fundraising materials, and
-
Ensures that team members collaborate with the Program Department to ensure that the presentation of MSF’s field activities in fundraising materials are factually accurate and reflect MSF’s operational and advocacy concerns.

Ensures that the team members collaborate with the Finance Department to ensure compliance with State and Federal obligations for the non profit sector and to ease financial reconciliation processes

Provides input and reviews Annual Report to ensure that it supports Development’s marketing and donor service needs.

Ensures Development department input in defining and implementing a strategic approach to the Internet, Intranet and Extranet with regards to the needs of MSF-USA and the network.

Participates in MSF movement-wide collaborative efforts to plan and coordinate fundraising strategies and approaches
Qualifications:
-
An advanced academic degree in a field related to the work of MSF plus a minimum of 8-10 years progressive experience in development, ideally including experience in an international organization, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience designing, managing and implementing fundraising strategies for a broad range of initiatives, including direct response marketing, major gifts and foundations and corporations.

Successful track record of closing significant major gifts

Demonstrated experience developing new revenue streams.

Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF and previous experience with the organization strongly preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrated in previous roles that required communication with a broad and diverse set of partners and impeccable judgment.

Ability to communicate complex ideas to a general audience.

Excellent analytical skills; facility with spreadsheets, budgets and forecasting

Demonstrated success in roles requiring analytic, systematic thinking while managing multiple priorities.

Collaborative team player who excels in a highly dynamic environment.

French, Spanish, and other languages an asset.

Ability to travel (approx. 10%) several times a year to Europe for network meetings and within the US.

Residence in or relocation to the New York City area.
