Claire Besombe, MSF Nurse Manager ITFC.MSF staff provides care to a severely malnourished child in the Intensive Therapeutic Feeding Programme at the MSF hospital, Yida refugee camp. The main causes of death and illness in Yida are the same as in early July, when the situation reached catastrophic levels, but the number of deaths has been greatly reduced due to the huge scale up of medical care by MSF and other actors. From mid-June to mid-July, the mortality rates were two times higher than emergency thresholds. A month later, the mortality rate in the MSF hospital had decreased from 25% to 2% but death continues to affect mainly children under five years, who are the most vulnerable.
