Vladimir Shalashniy, Coordinator for MSF’s post-release activities, is checking up on a 31-year old patient who is staying at the Artyomovsk TB dispensary. Once TB patients have finished their jail term, MSF also continues to provide them with treatment and support until they are cured. To help ex-inmates that find themselves in particularly difficult circumstances, MSF strives to makes special arrangements to solve social issues - such as arranging temporary housing.

In the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, MSF provides treatment and support to over 100 inmates and ex-inmates suffering from multi-drug-resistant (MDR) TB. MSF’s support includes diagnosis and testing, provision of medical treatment, and psychological support to help MDR-TB patients continue taking their medication. MSF has also rehabilitated lab facilities and introduced infection control measures to prevent transmission of the disease within the prison walls. MSF also provides ARV treatment to patients that are co-infected with HIV.
