Access to health care in the region of Vardenis and Tschambarak town, Gegharkunik Marz Province
Gegharkunik Marz is the most neglected and poorest province in Armenia. The health situation is worse than anywhere else in the country. Within Gegharkunik, the regions of Tshambarak, Vardenis at the North-East side of Lake Sevan are particularly forgotten and closed off. Almost the whole local population can be considered as vulnerable. A new project was launched in 2004 to improve the health situation of neglected rural populations in the region through an increased access to essential care for reproductive health and chronic diseases, strengthening quality service provision and community involvement. Health care facilities (6 ambulatories, 2 policlinics, 1 maternity and 2 waste areas are being renovated. National medical staff is being trained, and financial obstacles, such as user fees for patients, removed.
