Syrian refugee Awaash Al-Ahmad Al Hiweel sits with her 1½ year-old daughter Wafa’a in the waiting room of MSF’s clinic in Baalbek, the Bekaa Valley. Wafa’a has been suffering from diarrhea, dizziness and loss of appetite. Al Hiweel and her family live in an informal tented settlement, where the lack of proper latrines, clean water and poor living conditions contribute to poor health. Conditions in the camps were exacerbated by Lebanon’s heat wave in July/August 2015. In the Bekaa Valley, home to at least 410,000 refugees, temperatures soared to over 40 degrees. The heat doesn’t just bring discomfort; it also brings sickness.
