Miriam Quispe Brito. She is a nurse working with MSF. Before she became pregnant, she was afraid of infecting her child with Chagas disease and therefore did the treatment. In order to encourage the patients to follow the treatment she always tells her story. Many patients are afraid of the treatment because the drugs used have the risk of many side effects. Chagas disease is considered by WHO a neglected disease. Research and development (R&D) for new treatments remains severely underfunded. The majority of patients are very poor and represent an unprofitable market for drug companies. MSF has been treating Chagas disease in Bolivia since 2002. In this period about 4,500 people have been treated. Aiquile, Bolivia.
