One-year-old Hawa sleeps quietly as she receives a blood transfusion at the Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centrte (ITFC) in Bokoro hospital in Chad. Hawa was transferred to the hospital only hours earlier from an MSF mobile clinic in Gambir, about 20 minutes by road from the ITFC. Hawa’s parents travelled to Gambir with their daughter the day before, spent the night with some relatives in the village and waited for MSF staff to arrive in the morning. They were very worried as Hawa was weak, refusing food and suffering from diarrhea. After the first tests at the ITFC, Hawa was diagnosed with a congenital form of anaemia. Fortunately a compatible blood donor was found promptly.
