In November 2012 MSF conducted a fistula surgery camp for women requiring a fistula repair operation. This is a surgical operation that requires highly specialised surgical skills, and expert surgeon Dr Volker Herzog spent 3 weeks in the MSF Gogrial project in South Sudan's Warrap State conducting up to four operations per day. The majority of the operations were successful, with the exception of one woman who had previously undergone the fistula repair operation unsuccessfully elsewhere, making the operation this time doubly difficult. It is planned that MSF will organise another fistula surgery camp in 2013 and this patient will be encouraged to present again because one final operation should be enough to permanently solve the problem.
