An emergency team with the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is working with the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other international organizations to assess and support a rapid response to an Ebola outbreak in the country, confirmed by national health authorities on May 8.

The old town area of Mosul, in Iraq, experienced intense shelling, aerial bombing, and attacks with explosive devices during the most recent violence. Though much of the area is still in ruins, thousands of people have returned to their homes. MSF has responded by distributing 550 hygiene kits with items including soap, toothbrushes, shampoo, and water containers.

Ahmed was 14 years old when he lost his left arm. “I had gone out to press olives,” remembers the young Syrian. “We were on our way home. A plane flew by and dropped a barrel bomb that exploded, and shrapnel hit my hand. It felt like there was something dripping on my leg. I looked at my arm. It was completely torn off. There was one thread that held my arm to my body. I asked myself, ‘What’s going to happen to me now? It’s finished. I’m dead.’”

The attackers wore masks and used axes, machetes, and guns to slaughter civilians in the strife-torn Ituri province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), says Areiti, a mother of seven children. 

The morning the violence came to her village of Joo, she had no time to prepare her family’s escape. “I saw how they were killing people,” the 37-year-old says. “They cut people with axes and they slaughter with machetes. You cannot see them clearly because they are running after you. They attacked our village before Christmas, and we spent Christmas in the bush.”
