From war and civil strife to disease outbreaks and epidemics, MSF staff have been on the front lines to save lives and respond to urgent medical needs in 2017.

MSF is grateful to the extraordinarily talented photographers who have worked alongside our medical teams to bear witness to so many moving stories over the course of a turbulent year.

December 15, 2015, marks two years of conflict since fighting broke out in South Sudan's capital, Juba, and spread rapidly throughout the country. This collection of photographs reflects the work of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in 18 locations in South Sudan and in camps across the borders in Ethiopia and Uganda where many South Sudanese have taken shelter.

Juba/Nairobi, May 22, 2015:

Escalating fighting in South Sudan is exposing civilans to widespread violence and severely restricting the provision of desperately needed aid, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today.

An upsurge of violence in Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile states has resulted in the suspension of medical services, destruction of health structures and evacuation of medical staff.

Starting in February 2014, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing medical assistance to more than 30,000 South Sudanese refugees who fled their homes and sought sanctuary in Sudan’s White Nile state. Most came from Upper Nile state, which borders Sudan to the southeast, part of the large population of South Sudanese who’ve been displaced from their homes, fearing for their lives, since conflict erupted in their homeland in December 2013.
