PARIS/NEW YORK—Dozens of refugees and migrants held captive by human traffickers in Libya were shot and wounded while escaping during the night of May 23, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today.

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO/BARCELONA—Teams from the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated 20 injured people, including seven children, after a deadly attack in a village in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Armed militiamen stormed the village of Matopolo on the night of May 20, killing at least 12 people, according to official sources. MSF teams treated survivors at a hospital in Kakenge, about 10 kilometers [six miles] away.

Since August 25, 2017, more than 693,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district, fleeing a campaign of targeted violence by Myanmar’s military in Rakhine state. Combined with the Rohingya refugees already living in Bangladesh after fleeing previous outbreaks of violence, there are now more than 905,000 refugees in the sprawling Cox’s Bazar camps.

In early 2016 fighting erupted in Jebel Marra, Darfur, forcing nearly 160,000 people to flee in search of safety. Over 23,000 of them settled around the small village of Sortoni in what became a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs). Years later, despite the difficulties of living in a camp, many are still reluctant to return home.
