Dr. Abu Wassim was working inside the East Aleppo hospital that was hit by airstrikes on November 17, 2016. Here, in an interview recorded a week later, he tells the story of that day:

“We started hearing shells raining down on the buildings at the end of the street, about 500 meters away from the hospital. We heard 40 or more shells exploding, with the noise moving closer and closer towards the hospital. That’s when all the staff—technicians, nurses and doctors—evacuated all the patients down to the basement.

Concha Fernández is the project coordinator for two of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams currently responding to medical needs in Ecuador following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the northeast of the country on April 16. According to official figures, 570 people are confirmed dead, more than 7,000 are injured, and 155 people remain missing. More than 24,400 people are now living in shelters. Early Wednesday morning, a powerful aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck about 25 kilometers west of Muisne, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Three months after two earthquakes killed an estimated 8,500 people and injured another 20,000 in Nepal, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is reducing its operations.  

The international medical humanitarian organization will nonetheless continue monitoring for disease outbreaks in several remaining camps for displaced people and conducting surgical and post-operative support in hospitals where needs have been identified.

When the earthquake struck in Nepal on April 25, Gurung Ram Bamadur lost his flock and three of his fingers were crushed. When he was brought to the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital, his fingers had to be amputated. He now faces an uncertain future.
