Juba/Nairobi, May 22, 2015:

Escalating fighting in South Sudan is exposing civilans to widespread violence and severely restricting the provision of desperately needed aid, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today.

An upsurge of violence in Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile states has resulted in the suspension of medical services, destruction of health structures and evacuation of medical staff.

Along with the remaining population of Sa’ada, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team in the city spent last night under intense bombing by the military coalition led by Saudi Arabia that is fighting in Yemen. On Friday night, the coalition had given an ultimatum to the population to leave the city and its surrounding areas, declaring that the entire northern province would become a military target [Read MSF's response to the ultimatum here].

Scores of people have been wounded in fighting in Yemen over recent days, with many treated at the Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) hospital in the southern city of Aden.

Clashes in Aden have increased after Houthi fighters entered the city this morning. Looting is ongoing amidst the clashes and general chaos. The MSF hospital in the city has so far received 80 injured people today. More are coming.
