MSF has now treated more than 4,000 people for diphtheria since December 2017, according to Carla Pla, project medical director for an MSF hospital in Cox's Bazar, in Bangladesh. Nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees are living in camps in this area.

Zambia: MSF Data Published in New England Journal of Medicine Stresses Effectiveness of Single-Dose Oral Cholera Vaccine

Recent data from Zambia’s 2016 cholera epidemic found that giving people just one of the currently-recommended two doses of the oral cholera vaccine was nearly 90 percent effective for adequate short-term protection during this outbreak.

Located in the northeast of Syria, Ain Issa camp is a hub for people fleeing violence and areas controlled by the Islamic State organization. Around 8,000 people are currently living in the camp. “There are new arrivals every day,” says Arnaud Fablet, Emergency Coordinator for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

Nigeria: Tackling a Massive Outbreak in the "Meningitis Belt"

Since February, MSF's Nigeria Emergency Response Unit (NERU) has been helping the Nigerian Ministry of Health respond to an increased outbreak of meningitis in the country's Sokoto and Zamfara states. NERU Project Coordinator Bart Bardock spoke about the challenges facing MSF units attempting to mitigate the outbreak.

Cholera often breaks out when there is overcrowding and inadequate access to clean water, trash collection, and proper toilets. It causes profuse diarrhea and vomiting which can lead to death by intense dehydration, sometimes within a matter of hours.

Niger: Doctors Without Borders Supports Vaccination Campaign Against Deadly Meningitis Outbreak

May 19, 2017

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has deployed several emergency teams to Niger to contain a meningitis outbreak that has killed 179 people since the beginning of the year. Working closely with Niger’s Ministry of Public Health, MSF teams have vaccinated more than 358,800 people in the most affected areas while continuing to monitor at-risk areas and provide medical care to those affected by the disease. So far, the number of meningitis cases recorded across Niger this year has almost doubled compared to 2016 during the same period.
