NEW YORK, OCTOBER 24, 2020—Following this morning’s school shooting at Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in Kumba in southwest Cameroon, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is providing an ambulance service and surgical care in the local Presbyterian General Hospital (PGH).

So far, MSF teams have received a total of ten patients between the ages of 10 and 15 years old. Of these patients, five were taken by MSF ambulance to other hospitals for specialized treatment, four continue to receive treatment in PGH, and one child was pronounced dead on arrival.

Alberto Jodra Marcos, emergency coordinator for MSF in southwest Cameroon, said the following of today’s attack:

“As a medical humanitarian organization, we lament the tragic loss of life in the Kumba community. This attack, which saw children gunned down while attending school, was a reprehensible and indecent act. Civilian structures including schools and hospitals must not be targets.”
