Palliative Care for Advanced Cancer Patients in Mali

In Bamako, the capital of Mali, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) providesfree home and hospital based palliative care for cancer patients. Most patients are in the advanced stages of the disease and palliative care—i.e managing a patient’s pain and discomfort and providing them with support—is all that can be offered. In the video, MSF nurse Nathalie Kornfein says, “Some patients who arrive are in almost unbearable pain.” And MSF Doctor, Djénabou Diallo, describes the importance of pain management—one of her patients was in so much pain she could not talk, but after a month of treatment her pain subsided.
