Implementing new models of care for people with mental health conditions and epilepsy
Our work in Liberia
In Liberia, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a project for people living with mental health and neurological conditions, aiming to improve medical and psychosocial support for patients.
How we're helping in Liberia
In Montserrado County, MSF works in five health facilities in collaboration with clinical staff from the Ministry of Health. Our psychologists work with neurologists and psychiatrists to provide outpatient care to people with epilepsy and mental health conditions. We support people with epilepsy in managing their symptoms and offer diagnosis and treatment for patients with mental health conditions.
Depending on the level of care required, MSF teams also organize referrals to general health care centers and the psychiatric hospital. In addition, our psychosocial support workers and health volunteers work with patients’ families and communities to address the social stigma endured by people who live with neurological and mental health conditions.
The project implements MSF’s patient-centered approach, which aims to actively involve patients in decision-making about their own care plan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
