Charitable Remainder Trust

Provide steady income while creating lasting support for MSF.

You may be exploring ways to:

  1. Generate income while managing potential tax implications.
  2. Create a lasting impact for the organizations and causes you care about.

A charitable remainder trust can help address both.

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) satisfies both objectives. By unlocking value from assets such as cash, appreciated securities, a CRT can create a tax-efficient income stream for you and/or your beneficiaries for life (or up to 20 years).

All of this while gaining the amazing feeling of knowing the remainder of your trust goes toward our organization’s mission of helping people in crisis.

How CRTs work

It’s easy to get started and start earning with a charitable remainder trust with MSF.

  1. Design a structure that works best for you and establish your trust with MSF’s help.
  2. Transfer cash or appreciated assets to fund a CRT.
  3. You and/or other beneficiaries receive payments for your and/or your selected beneficiaries’ lives, or a term of up to 20 years.

To help ensure effective and efficient administration of these trusts, MSF generally serves as Trustee when the following minimums are met:

  • $100,000 minimum when MSF is the sole remainder beneficiary
  • $200,000 minimum when additional charities are included, provided MSF’s remainder interest is at least 50%
  1. We manage and invest your trust assets for you as Trustee.
  2. You and/or other beneficiaries receive payments for your and/or your selected beneficiaries’ lives, or a term of up to 20 years.
  3. You’re typically entitled to an income tax deduction in the year you transfer assets to the trust.
  4. When the trust ends, any remaining assets are directed to support the lifesaving medical work of MSF.

The financial and philanthropic advantages of CRTs

  • Unlock “stuck” wealth – Convert an appreciated, low-income or non-income-producing asset (appreciated stock, real estate, etc.) into an income stream.
  • Create income – Secure supplemental income every year for life or up to 20 years.
  • You may be entitled to a tax deduction – Qualify for an immediate charitable income tax deduction based on the gift amount expected to pass to MSF.
  • Avoid capital gains tax – Tap into the value of highly appreciated assets, such as long-held stock, to fund the trust, which can be sold and reinvested without triggering immediate capital gains tax.
  • Deduct assets transferred into the trust from your taxable estate.
  • Provide your retirement or family income needs, while making a larger gift than you might have thought possible.
