MSF's Year In South Sudan: Responding To Urgent, Unmet Medical Needs

The year for MSF draws to a close with uncertainty about the future of health care throughout South Sudan, and uncertainty about the future for the refugees from Sudan. “These people have fled terrible violence in Sudan and lost family members during their arduous journeys for safety,” said Tara Newell, MSF emergency coordinator in Jamam refugee camp. “And now they are sitting exposed in refugee camps on a flood plain and dying from preventable diseases due to horrific living conditions. We have to proceed with a great sense of urgency.”

MSF has been active in the region since 1978.

Amal was admitted to the MSF clinic on the 12th of June. She was first located at K43 with UNHCR and proceeded to Kilo18 and was then referred to the Jamam hospital, she probably has TB. Nurse Emma Massey from Sweden is examining her.

OPD ward in Agok. MSF is responding to the consequences of fighting in the Abyei region of Sudan following violent clashes that began on the night of Friday 20 May. Whole towns have been emptied and thousands of people are on the move in a bid to escape the fighting. The situation in the area remains extremely volatile. The population left their homes with few belongings, and travelling conditions are particularly harsh now that the rainy season has started and the roads are muddy.

They join the 70,000 refugees who are already hosted in overcrowded refugee camps. With no space left in the camps, and life-threatening shortages of water, a place of refuge with the basic life-sustaining essentials needs urgently to be found. MSF is providing medical care and treating 90,000 litres of water per day in their temporary gathering-place under trees in the harsh environment of this remote corner of South Sudan.
