BJH, run by MSF, now admits about 100 children per week for conditions including malaria, severe acute malnutrition, non-bloody diarrhea, and respiratory tract infections. It includes an emergency room, intensive care unit, pediatric ward, and nutrition ward, as well as Liberia's only pediatric surgery program. The hospital is also a certified clinical teaching site for Liberian nursing students.
BJH regularly receives some of the most critical pediatric cases from a large urban area with approximately 1 million people. All too often, children in Liberia die from conditions that would be successfully treated in a wealthier country. These conditions can be exacerbated by toxic home remedies or malnutrition, or because children are brought for treatment very late.
Despite difficulties beyond the hospital's control, Dr. Haj-Hassan explains how practical improvements in patient care, staff training, and team management helped save children's lives.
