Mohamed is from Derek, a town in the Kurdish region of Syria on the border with Iraq and Turkey.
He later moved to Damascus to work as a minibus driver. He is the father of 4 and his youngest child
is not yet walking. Himself and his family fled Damascus in 2013 when the city became unsafe and
war broke out in Syria.
Like thousands other Syrian Kurds, the family ended up crossing into Iraqi Kurdestan and settling in
Domiz refugee camp, hosting today over 40.000 people.4 and his youngest child
is not yet walking. Himself and his family fled Damascus in 2013 when the city became unsafe and
war broke out in Syria.
Support to Syrian refugees living in camps was drastically cut this summer when food vouchers’
value was slashed from 31 USD to 10. Less than half the initial number of beneficiaries are still
receiving financial support.
Every day tens of families resident in the camp are again readying themselves to set off towards the
unknown, heading this time towards Europe where they hope to find long term safety and rebuild
their livelihoods.
