WEBCAST: Deadly and Neglected: Stepping Up for Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) was eradicated in much of North America last century, and is now often thought of as a disease of the past. But TB remains a global killer: more than 4,300 people die from it every day—the equivalent of three people every minute. For patients suffering from TB, medical treatments can be long, painful and often ineffective, with life-altering side effects.

This is a growing global health crisis that is not being addressed, in large part due to indifference and neglect. Investments in the development of new tools to fight TB are falling short. In the last 50 years, only two new drugs for treating the disease have been registered, and even those remain out of reach for most TB patients. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) supports more than 22,000 TB patients in 75 projects around the world. We’re also working to accelerate research and improve access to quality treatment for our patients, in some cases running our own clinical trials for new drugs.
