One week ago, on May 12, 2020, the maternity ward of Dasht-e-Barchi hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, was attacked by unknown assailants. “No one could believe they would attack a maternity ward," said Frederic Bonnot, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) head of programs in Afghanistan. "They came to kill the mothers." At least 24 people were killed, the large majority of them patients. An MSF midwife was also among the dead. MSF condemns this senseless act of violence, which has cost the lives of many people and deprived women and children in Kabul of essential health care services. MSF's maternity center has provided lifesaving care since 2014, with a focus on complicated deliveries and sick newborns. This video provides a glimpse of the urgent work carried out inside the hospital over the years.
