MSF activities in 2025
In 2025, MSF maintained our support for the national AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) programs in Kachin and Northern Shan states, and in the Yangon region.
National TB program clinics across Yangon enhanced infection prevention and control measures, which MSF started supporting in February at the Insein Union TB Institute, later expanding to two more facilities. We also renovated infrastructure, donated materials, and provided training and monitoring.
MSF also continued to assist communities affected by conflict between the Myanmar Armed Forces and different ethnic and resistance groups. In Kachin, we distributed hygiene kits to displaced families in areas we could safely access.
In Rakhine state, Rohingya people continued to attempt journeys by sea, hoping to escape systemic persecution and seek safety in neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Malaysia. When the Myanmar Navy intercepts boats, the people aboard, including children, may be detained. We provided 30 days’ worth of food to children after they were released.
In March 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. MSF delivered emergency assistance in the most heavily affected areas, including Mandalay, Sagaing, and Nyaungshwe in Southwestern Shan state. We focused on distributing relief items and shelter kits, as well as improving water and sanitation conditions by drilling boreholes, constructing a pipeline, and installing water treatment systems.
In Dawei, Tanintharyi region, we were forced to suspend and eventually close a project due to high levels of insecurity, ending 20 years of essential health care services we provided there.
